Ingredients

  • 1 to 1.5 pounds of shaved steak
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning mix (or homemade seasoning)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Taco shells or tortillas
  • Toppings like shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole

Instructions

Season the shaved steak:

  • Place the shaved steak in a large bowl and season it with the taco seasoning mix and some salt and pepper. Ensure that the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the meat. You can either use a store-bought taco seasoning mix or make your own blend by combining ingredients like chilli powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and a pinch of cayenne pepper for added spice.

Heat the olive oil:

  • Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet or frying pan.

Sauté the Onions and Peppers:

  • If you're including bell peppers in your tacos, add them to the hot skillet and sauté for approximately 2-3 minutes until they soften.
  • Introduce the thinly sliced onions and continue sautéing until both the onions and peppers turn tender and develop a slight caramelization, usually 5-7 minutes.
  • If you're short on time, you can skip this step and proceed directly to cooking the shaved steak.

Cook the shaved steak:

  • Push the sautéed onions and peppers to one side of the skillet.
  • Place the shaved steak on the other side of the skillet, ensuring it's spread out evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Cook the shaved steak on one side for approximately 2-3 minutes; the thin meat cooks quickly.
  • Flip the steak using tongs and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes on the other side or until it reaches your preferred level of doneness.

Combine and heat through:

  • Once the steak is cooked to your liking, combine it with the sautéed onions and peppers. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until the garlic becomes fragrant.

Warm the taco shells:

  • Warm the taco shells or tortillas in a separate skillet or in the oven until they are heated through.

Assemble your tacos:

  • Fill each taco shell or tortilla with a generous portion of the shaved steak and the onion-pepper mixture.

Add your favourite toppings:

  • Customize your tacos by topping them with your preferred ingredients, such as shredded cheese, lettuce, diced tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole.
